Description
The STS rubber boot (part number N18660), also known as a cable boot, protects the stud connection where your grounding cable terminates on the STS 300 Ground Monitoring System enclosure. It seals the cable stud against moisture, dust and mechanical damage, keeping the ground path clean and reliable.
Where the boot fits
The boot covers the brass nuts on the cable stud and the lip of the phenolic nut, sitting flush against the enclosure wall. Beneath it, the phenolic insulator connects the grounding cable to the circuit board inside the enclosure. The boot is part of every cable change: the cable replacement instructions (PDF) show the boot being slid off the old cable and fitted onto the new one, with the black cable inserted into the 7/16 in end of the boot.
When to replace it
A cable boot is the protective cover over the cable stud. Replace a cracked or worn boot to keep the connection sealed so the ground stays verifiable. The STS 300 maintenance schedule includes checking that the boots are installed properly on both sides of the enclosure and that they are not damaged or cracked.

Is a cable boot the same as a rubber boot?
Yes. STS uses both names for part N18660, the protective cover over the cable stud.
Do I need tools to replace the boot?
The boot slides on and off the cable. Replacing it as part of a cable change uses a #2 Phillips screwdriver and a 9/16 in wrench, per the STS cable replacement instructions. Switch off power and lock out the system before maintenance.
Is this a rubber wire boot?
It does the same job. A rubber wire boot covers the point where a conductor terminates; this one covers the cable stud where the grounding cable connects to the STS 300 enclosure. It is sized for STS grounding cables, with a 7/16 in opening for the cable.
Will this boot fit another manufacturer’s cable or terminal?
It is made for the STS cable stud and the STS coil and straight grounding cables, and measures 2.15 x 1.741 x 1.30 in. For any other application, send STS your stud and cable dimensions before ordering.
