Description
The Grounding Clamp Repair Kit (part number RK-1) replaces damaged or worn parts on the STS K78160A aluminum grounding clamp. The kit includes stainless steel contact points and all electrical connection hardware, so a worn clamp can be returned to service without replacing the whole clamp and cable assembly.
About the K78160A clamp
The K78160A is made from cast aluminum, since non-ferrous metals will not generate a spark when struck. Its clamping force and stainless steel binding points hold the clamp on the surface without slipping. It is commonly used on tanker trucks, railcars, barges and large vats, and it is the standard clamp choice (code KA) in the STS 300 ordering guide.
When to replace parts
The contact points are what make the electrical connection, so their condition directly affects the ground reading. The STS 300 installation and operating manual (PDF) lists these clamp-related causes in its troubleshooting table:
- Red light on when attached: the stainless steel points are not making contact with the metallic surface.
- Green light on when not attached: the stainless steel points are set at improper depth and are touching, or the isolating washer on the clamp is missing or damaged.
The maintenance schedule also includes checking that clamp points are not worn and are free from corrosion, and that the clamp cable wire terminals are crimped and secured at the clamp.

RK-1 is the kit for the K78160A. For the K78160ASRS with strain release, use the RK-2 kit.
Is the clamp spring included?
RK-1 includes contact points and electrical connection hardware. The spring is covered by a separate spring repair kit, RK-3, for the K78160A and K78160ASRS.
