What We Do

Many industries that regularly handle combustible materials, from petroleum refining to chemical processing and fueling stations, are at risk of catastrophic accidents if materials are not properly handled. The buildup of static charges generated by machinery can cause sparking, which may ignite combustible gasses or liquids with disastrous effects to personnel and equipment. Sparks caused by static electricity are a major cause of fires and explosions within the industrial sector.

Static grounding is a way of managing static discharge by connecting two or more pieces of equipment with a conductive wire, which is then earthed via a grounding rod or electrode. This effectively drains static charges away from dangerous materials.

STS has provided grounding equipment and static monitoring systems for over 40 years. Our STS 300 Series Electronic Indicator Ground Assembly monitors the entire path of the conducting wire, from the equipment clamp to the grounding rod. In the event of any interruption in the grounding process, the STS 300 will automatically halt all equipment until the ground can be re-established.

Product Features

The STS 300 System provides two interlocking dry contacts for connection to filling equipment and controls to ensure no transfer of flammable product can begin without an established ground.

Chemical Processing

Chemical Processing

Utilizing drums, containers, and vats for filling, mixing, blending, and dispensing explosive chemicals will generate hazardous levels of static electricity, leading to an increased risk of fire and injury in your supply chain operation. Integrating static grounding control systems will help mitigate hidden hazards that can result in injury to employees and damage to expensive equipment.

Vacuum Trucks

Removal of flammable materials from storage tanks and facilities occurs daily all over the world. Vacuum trucks are critical in moving flammable industrial liquids from sites such as refineries, storage facilities, and drill wells. Be sure your vacuum truck is properly grounded when removing these flammable industrial liquids from your work site. Our systems can be mounted directly to the truck so there is always a ground monitoring system on site.

Barge & Ship Transportation

Marine tankers transport large volumes of liquids and gases all over the world. When these massive vessels come into port and dock, these ships must be grounded before any sort of loading or unloading operation occurs. Failure to ground the vessel can cause an unexpected discharge of static electricity.

Oil Rigs

Grounding is essential at drilling facilities when raw materials are removed from the earth and transported into temporary storage facilities. It is vital that these storage containers are constantly grounded as the raw material is constantly pumped in and out of them.

Grain Processing

Grain Processing

Moving grain and dust particles within a processing facility creates a hazardous environment for static electricity to build up. Dry environments with dust particles will transmit static charges which can lead to fire. Silos with mixing equipment and conveyors will spread this charge throughout a facility and could cause an unexpected spark anywhere in your plant.

Petroleum Refining

Many different operations occur at a refining plant during a normal operating day. When flammable liquids are to be moved in and out of the refining plant, all storage and transportation means must be grounded to earth, just as the facility is. This will protect all operators and equipment from static spark during the transfer of these products.
